The Oakville A's entered Monday night coming off a hard fought run at the Vaughan Tournament that saw them run out of steam in the semi finals, finishing 4-1 for the weekend. With much of the pitching depleted, the A's sent their fresh armed ace Gord Robertson to the hill as they looked to get back into the win column in COBA league play against division rival Milton Red Sox (3-9)
Monday's game was a pitchers dual, as both Robertson and Mitlon starter LHP Dan Todoschuck were both dominant throughout the game. The A's opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when veteran first baseman Michael Kennedy drew a one out walk before moving to third on a double to the right center gap by Julian Richards to give the A's two runners in scoring position with one out. Zach Dickson capitalized on the situation by driving Kennedy home on an RBI groundout to the shortstop to give the A's a 1-0 lead.
Fast forward to the eighth inning as the A's looked to add some insurance to their 1-0 lead. With two outs in the eighth, Zach Dickson would pick up a single, followed by another single by Chase Dobbie to give the A's a two out threat. Jeff Jarockis drew a two out walk to load the bases for catch Michael Modestino who would turn on a fastball for a two RBI single to give the A's a 3-0 lead heading into the ninth inning.
A's RHP Andrew Kotulak would come on in relief of Robertson, looking to secure his first save of the season. Making just his second appearance of the season, Kotulak ran into a little trouble as he walked the leadoff hitter, followed by a single to give the Red Sox some life in the ninth. DH Jordan Windisch would drive a double to the left center gap to score their first run of the game, putting the tying run at second base with no outs in the inning. Center fielder Brendan O'Flynn hit a hard chopping ground ball to second base where Curtis Braun came up throwing a missile to home to cut down the lead runner for the first out of the inning. With runners at the corners, and one out, Kotulak spun and fired a pickoff to first to catch the leaning O'Flynn for the second out of the inning before retiring Daniel Campos on a fly out to right to end the threat and secure his first save, and the 3-1 victory for the A's.
Gord Robertson came up huge for the A's, as they were extremely short on arms and needed a good outing from their ace. Robertson finished the night throwing eight innings, while allowing just four hits and striking out four to improve to 2-2 on the season.
The A's will get a couple days to rest before making the long trip to St. Catharines for a 7:30 pm first pitch start against the first place Niagara Metros (9-5).
Go A's!
